MANAGING INJECTION SITE REACTIONS

Injection site reactions occur in up to 50% of patients starting injectable medications

This is different to an allergic reactionand and is generally mild and eases within a few days.

Symptoms can include mild swelling, itching, pain, redness, warmth, rash.

To help minimise these:

  • Take the injections out of the fridge 30 mins before use.

  • Inject in the manner that you have been taught.

  • Use a cold pack before and after the injection.

  • Do not rub the area after the injection.

  • Rotate the injection sites

  • Use a painkiller if necessary, eg paracetamol.

  • Take an anti-histamine

  • Use over the counter hydrocortisone cream.

If you feel the side effects  have not responded to the above, or the reaction is larger than your first, please contact your Rheumatology team.

If you have an all over body rash, chest tightness, severe itching, hives (raised bumps), swelling of the lips, tongue or throat please seek urgent medical advice.
